Today’s free crochet patterns are these comfortable crochet sweaters to wear in the Fall or Winter, these are all great for throwing on over a dress or if you are keeping it casual team your sweater up with some nice comfy jeans. These sweaters are made for women and most of them are size inclusive which means they start from size xs all the way up xxl so even if you eat a bit too much turkey over thanks giving you can still feel comfortable in your sweater if you haven’t made it fitted.

Crochet Sweaters

All these sweaters use different stitches and as you will see when scrolling through them they all look different and unique so why not make all of them?! All these crochet patterns are suitable for beginner crocheters, some of them are suitable for a more advanced beginner crocheter but i am sure if you get stuck and have questions the original designers of these crochet sweater patterns will help you along the way. There are a couple of sweaters below that use chunky yarn so why not crochet a family member one too as they will work up really quick with a bigger hook.

Crochet Techniques For Sweaters

Most sweaters are made in the round either starting at the top at the neckline and working your way down, increasing as you go then to skip stitches for the arm holes and then the rest of the body is worked and arms are done at the end. The other way to crochet a sweater is still working in the round but starting at the bottom of the sweater and working the body first, skipping stitches for arm holes and then decreasing until you get to the neckline and then arms are worked after. There are some crochet sweater patterns that are done in two rectangles, seamed together and then arms are worked at the end.

The common stitches you will need to know are the chain stitch (ch), single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), double crochet (dc), treble crochet (tr) and slip stitch (sl st).

Once you have mastered the common crochet stitches you will find it easy to crochet a perfect sweater.

Tips For Making Crochet Sweaters

Here are a few helpful tips on making your next pair of fingerless gloves:

  • Choose the correct yarn – Most crochet patterns will suggest a yarn so if you are following a crochet pattern below that you like look at the yarn they have suggested and either go for the exact match or go to yarnsub.com type in the yarn the pattern calls for and it will sub it for you by it’s closest match – If a pattern states to use an aran yarn don’t then choose a DK yarn as the sweater will be far too small.
  • Check your gauge and hook – Now you have your yarn sorted you will need to check your gauge, sweaters are a fitted item even if they are oversized so they should have a gauge stated for you so now you will need to do a swatch with your chosen yarn and the hook the crochet pattern suggests if your gauge is incorrect you will need to adjust your hook size accordingly until you get the correct gauge.
  • Try your sweater on – Even if you have the correct yarn, hook and gauge it is still best to try your sweater on as you are crocheting as your tension may have changed and your sweater may be too big or too small.
