Design

The Brianna Sideways Shawl is a bit different than other shawls i have done as i normally design them lacy but this stitch really stood out to me and not everyone wants to have a shawl that has lots of lace so i combined moss stitch with puff stitches and then threw in some hdc stitches to give it a bit of a break from such confined stitches and i really think it works!

Working moss stitch in to a piece gives it a textured look and this area actually worked up really quick even though it consists of chain and single crochet stitches. Because of the closed stitches i would recommend it being more of a autumn winter shawl but this would actually look great as a scarf also! Please note this is a beginner plus crochet pattern so if you’re not quite ready to do this yet then just save it either on Pinterest, Etsy or Ravelry.

Yarn:

For this shawl pattern i used Cascade 220 which has an AMAZING amount of different shades which i absolutely love when choosing yarn for projects. It is made with 100% highland Peruvian wool and is perfect for shawl projects as it blocks so nicely as it really opens up the stitch definition and that is exactly what you want when blocking a shawl.

This yarn is classed as more of a high end yarn but when you are making a shawl that you want to last for years then you should go for a yarn that will stand the test of time and i really feel this yarn is perfect for that. You will need 1100 yards for your shawl.

  • 100 grams
  • 220 yards /200 meters
  • 100% wool
  • This yarn is hand wash only / Cascade 220 superwash is machine washable

Yarn Substitutions:

You can easily substitute the yarn i used for a more of an affordable yarn or one that is machine washable. Just remember acrylic yarn doesn’t wet block as well as wool but you could always carefully steam block your shawl.

Completing The Pattern:

To complete the pattern you will now follow this sequence:

  • Moss Stitch
  • Puff and Moss Stitch
  • Moss Stitch
  • Hdc and Moss Stitch

Keep repeating the sequence above to complete your shawl until it measures 61.5 inches approx  ending your shawl with 3 inches of Moss Stitch.

Fasten off and weave in ends. Move on to blocking.

Notes:

If you would like your shawl longer, carry on repeating the sequence above finishing with 3 inches of Moss Stitch but please note you will need more yarn to do this.

Blocking:

Don’t be scared to really stretch the shawl when blocking as it really opens up the stitches and gives them definition and makes your shawl lay completely flat.

Soak finished shawl for 20 minutes in cool water and squeeze excess water out gently. Do not twist. Lay damp shawl on blocking boards and stretch to 17.5 inch width x 71.5 inch length (or to your desired width and length) use blocking pins to hold in place. Let your shawl dry completely before unpinning.
