Design
Today’s free crochet pattern is this bright and beautiful chunky baby blanket pattern crocheted in rainbow colors! Some of you that have been here for a while are used to my patterns being quite minimalist but when it comes to baby blankets i just love all the colors!
When it came to making this chunky rainbow ripple baby blanket to be honest it was a bit like how many colors can i fit in to this then – Maybe i got a little carried away but it turned out beautiful!

So you may have noticed in the pictures that the ripples really POP out at you and there’s a little secret to this that you may or may not know… Back loops! Going into the back loop only when crocheting this gives the effect that that these ripple stitches are raised, it’s just so dreamy and gorgeous.
To make this chunky rainbow ripple i used two strands of DK yarn held together and a 6mm crochet hook, the reason i didn’t use just one strand of chunky yarn is that i really couldn’t find any chunky yarn with so many yummy colors but i just love Stylecraft Special DK yarn, so even though i have used 2 strands held at once it isn’t ridiculously chunky and stiff.

Yarn:
For this project i used the Stylecraft Special DK . There are so many colors to choose from and they are so bright and beautiful for a baby blanket and the price is really cheap, even though this is an acrylic yarn it’s definitely more of the premium kind, it’s so soft to work with.
Yarn Notes:
You will need to hold two strands at one time so i would advise buying two balls of the same color to make it easier as i tried splitting the yarn balls in half but that didn’t work out too well.
Please note though you will have quite a bit of yarn leftover if you buy two balls of each color but they can easily be used for your next baby blanket – No waste here!
You will need 323 yards of each color or 646 yards if you are buying two balls of each color to make it easier.

Yarn Substitutions:
It is very easy to substitute this yarn all you would need to do is find your favorite yarn in DK or in a chunky weight. I used acrylic for this baby blanket pattern so i would advise in doing the same. Please see my yarn notes above to see what i done with the DK yarn and remember if you are using DK yarn you will hold two strands at one time!

This pattern is written using American standard crochet terminology.
Notes:
- Ch2 at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch from here and throughout unless otherwise stated
- The very first 2dc will be worked through both loops
- The very last 2dc will be worked through both loops
- The rest of the pattern will be worked in back loops only
- x2 strands of yarn held together at one time throughout the whole pattern

For the body of the blanket i used all these colors in the order above and done 2 rows in each color then started from color 1 again and so on (minus the border color) until i was ready to do my border.
Hold two strands for each color throughout the whole of the blanket if you are using DK yarn.
Chunky Rainbow Ripple Baby Blanket
Holding x2 strands of yarn together:
R1. Ch109, 2dc in 2nd ch from hook * 1dc in next 3 chains, dc2tog over next 2 chains, dc2tog over next 2 chains, 1dc in next 3 chains ** 2dc in next chain, 2dc in next chain * Repeat across from * to * ending last repeat at ** 2dc in very last chain, turn
R2. Ch2, 2dc in very first st * 1dc in next 3sts, dc2tog over next 2sts, dc2tog over next 2sts, 1dc in next 3sts ** 2dc in next st, 2dc in next st * Repeat from * to * ending last repeat at ** 2dc in very last chain, turn
Repeat row 2 until the blanket measures 33 inches. To make the blanket longer carry on repeating row 2.
Do not fasten off. Move on to border.
Border:
R1. Join white yarn or the color that you have decided for your border.
- 1sc in first 2sts * 1hdc in next 3sts, 1dc in next 2sts, 1hdc in next 3sts ** 1sc in next 4sts * Repeat from * to * ending last repeat at ** 1sc in next st, work (1sc, ch1, 1sc) in last st (first corner made)
- Down the first side of the blanket evenly work dc stitches until you get to the bottom corner stitch
- Work (1dc, ch1, 1dc) in very first st along the bottom of the blanket (second corner made) * 1hdc in next 3sts, 1sc in next 4sts, 1hdc in next 3sts ** 1dc in next 2sts * Repeat from * to * ending last repeat at ** Work (1dc, ch1, 1dc) in very last st (third corner made)
- Up the second side of the blanket evenly work dc stitches until you get to the beg stitch
- Work (1sc, ch1) in beg st (fourth corner made) Join with a slip stitch to beg sc
R2. Ch1, Work 1sc in each st around, when you get to each ch1 space, work (1sc, ch1, 1sc) in the ch1 space, join with a slip stitch to beg sc
Fasten off and weave in ends.
