Design

Today’s free crochet pattern is the Fuss Free Sideways Shawl which is a beginner crochet pattern, when i say beginner i mean full on beginner it’s that easy you don’t have to really pay any attention whilst crocheting this one. After you get your first initial row set up you will literally just be repeating row 2 throughout and that’s it! This shawl features chain stitches and double crochet stitches and gives it a ladder effect, i do have one quite similar to this if you’re looking for another one very samey which is the Penelope Sideways Shawl. For this shawl I used Cascade 220 Aran in the color Irudescence and i think this color was perfect for this type of crochet stitch pattern.

Yarn:

For this shawl pattern i used Cascade 220 which has an AMAZING amount of different shades which i absolutely love when choosing yarn for projects. It is made with 100% highland Peruvian wool and is perfect for shawl projects as it blocks so nicely as it really opens up the stitch definition and that is exactly what you want when blocking a shawl.

This yarn is classed as more of a high end yarn but when you are making a shawl that you want to last for years then you should go for a yarn that will stand the test of time and i really feel this yarn is perfect for that.

  • 100 grams
  • 220 yards /200 meters
  • 100% wool
  • This yarn is hand wash only / Cascade 220 superwash is machine washable

Yarn Substitutions:

You can easily substitute the yarn i used for a more of an affordable yarn or one that is machine washable. Just remember acrylic yarn doesn’t wet block as well as wool but you could always carefully steam block your shawl.

Let’s get to the pattern!

Remember that you can choose the neat ad free, printable PDF version HERE which includes a photo tutorial of each repeating row and some helpful info if you are wanting to use thinner yarn!.

R1. Ch68, 1dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1dc in next ch * Ch3, skip next 3 chains ** 1dc in next 3 chains * Repeat from * to * until 2 chains remain ending last repeat at ** 1dc in last 2 chains, turn

R2. Ch1, 1dc in first 2dc * Ch3, skip ch3 space ** 1dc in next 3dc * Repeat from * to * until 2dc remain ending last repeat at ** 1dc in last 2dc, turn

Repeat row 2 until shawl measures 61 inches approx.

Fasten off and weave in ends. Move on to blocking.

Notes:

If you would like your shawl longer, carry on repeating rows 2 but please note you will need more yarn to do this.

Blocking:

Don’t be scared to really stretch the shawl when blocking as it really opens up the stitches and gives them definition and makes your shawl lay completely flat.

Soak finished shawl for 20 minutes in cool water and squeeze excess water out gently. Do not twist. Lay damp shawl on blocking boards and stretch to 16.5 inch width x 69.5 inch length (or to your desired width and length) use blocking pins to hold in place. Let your shawl dry completely before unpinning.

For personal use only. Do not copy, share or sell the pattern in part or whole.
You may sell the finished item made using this pattern.
