For this free crochet pattern i used blohdc stitch, if you are a beginner you are probably wondering what the heck is a blohdc? Well it stands for back loop only half double crochet, so all those hdc’s you have been practicing will come in handy for this pattern.
To explain the back loop only bit better is if you do a crochet stitch like a hdc or a dc then you face the top of the stitch like looking bird’s eye view,on top of the stitch you will see two loops a front one which is closest to you and a back one and when you go to work a stitch on top of the stitch you made you will go under the back loop of it which is the one furthest away and it’s really that easy!

When worked in rows it will give this rib like effect. For this pattern the hat is worked flat and then seamed at the end. This is a child’s hat so will fit a child aged 5-12 years old. It was modeled by a 7 year old.
The yarn i used for the hat was Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick in mustard which makes this pattern super quick to make and then made a cute pom pom with a pom pom maker this can be done with some scrap yarn. I used Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick in fisherman for this.

R1. Ch26, 1hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn (25hdc)
R2. Ch1, 1hdc in first st through both loops, 1blohdc in each hdc across until last hdc, 1hdc in last st through both loops, turn (25hdc)
R3. Repeat row 2 until piece measures 18 inches (approx)
Fasten off leaving a long tail to seam hat up.
Seaming:
- Lay rectangle piece flat so the wrong side is facing you
- Using the long tail for seaming and tapestry needle seam hat up going through front loop of hdc stitch and through beginning chain stitch row lining up all the stitches as you go along. Go all the way up the rectangle until all stitches are seamed – Do not fasten off
- Once the rectangle is seamed it would of made a tube, now go in and out through stitches around the top of the tube pulling tight as you go around, this will close one end of the tube up. Keep going around in and out through stitches so the tube is then closed tight.
Weave in ends, pull hat so the right way is facing you and fold over brim.
Make large pom pom using a pom pom maker or however you want to and attach to the middle of beanie and weave in ends.
