Supplies You Will Need:

• 5mm Crochet Hook
• Any Scrap Yarn
• Yarn Needle
• Tape Measure
• Scissors

Beg – Beginning

Written In:

This pattern is written using American standard crochet terminology.

Notes:

• This crochet pattern is worked in the round.
• Turn over your granny square after each round.
• Repeat what is in between the stars from * to * until the end of the round.
• If you have a ** in your row you need to follow the pattern from * to * all the way around and then when you get near the end of the round you will finish your last repeat at ** because you can no longer complete the entire repeat, then follow what it says to do to complete the round.
• Read each row carefully before starting the round.

R1. Make a magic ring or Ch4, join with a slip stitch to beg ch to form a ring – Ch2 (counts as 1dc) 3dc in ring, ch2, Work (4dc, ch2) in ring – Repeat x2 more times, join with a slip stitch to beg dc, slip stitch in to the next ch2 space, fasten off (x4 lots of (4dc, ch2)

R2. Join yarn in any ch2 space – Ch2 (counts as 1dc) Work (1dc, ch2, 2dc) in ch2 space, 1dc in next 4dc * Work (2dc, ch2, 2dc) in next ch2 space, 1dc in next 4dc * Repeat from * to * all the way around, join with a slip stitch to beg dc, slip stitch in to next ch2 space, fasten off (x4 corners (2dc, ch2, 2dc) + x4 lots of 4dc)

R3. Join yarn in any ch2 space – Ch2 (counts as 1dc) Work (1dc, ch2, 2dc) in ch2 space, 1dc in next 8dc * Work (2dc, ch2, 2dc) in next ch2 space, 1dc in next 8dc * Repeat from * to * all the way around, join with a slip stitch to beg dc, slip stitch in to next ch2 space, fasten off (x4 corners (2dc, ch2, 2dc) + x4 lots of 8dc)

R4. Join yarn in any ch2 space – Ch2 (counts as 1dc) Work (1dc, ch2, 2dc) in ch2 space * (Ch1, skip next 3dc, 2dc in the space before the next dc) – Repeat x2 more times, ch1, skip next 3dc ** Work (2dc, ch2, 2dc) in next ch2 space * Repeat from * to * all the way around, finishing last repeat at ** join with a slip stitch to beg dc, slip stitch in to next ch2 space, fasten off (x4 corners (2dc, ch2, 2dc), x12 lots of 2dc + x16 lots of ch1 spaces)

R5. Join yarn in any ch2 space – Ch2 (counts as 1dc) Work (1dc, ch2, 2dc) in ch2 space, 1dc in next 14sts (includes dc stitches and ch1 spaces) * Work (2dc, ch2, 2dc) in next ch2 space, 1dc in next 14sts (includes dc stitches and ch1 spaces) * Repeat from * to * all the way around, join with a slip stitch to beg dc, slip stitch in to next ch2 space (x4 lots of 18dc)

Fasten off and weave in ends. Move on to blocking.

Blocking:

If you are using natural fiber yarn – Soak the finished granny square for 10 minutes in cool water and squeeze excess water out gently. Do not twist. Lay damp square on blocking boards and use blocking pins to hold in place. Let your granny square dry completely before unpinning.

If you are using synthetic yarn – You can steam block either with a hand steamer or the steam function of your iron by holding the steamer above your granny square for a couple of seconds making sure you don’t touch the yarn otherwise it will burn.
