Design
Today’s free crochet pattern is the Wren Sideways Shawl which is a beautiful lacy shawl with easy to do stitches, this is a beginner plus crochet pattern and is worked sideways as i know many of you prefer to work your shawls like that instead of crocheting a long chain.
I really enjoyed crocheting this shawl and it worked up so quickly and the color is absolutely gorgeous! I worked my shawl using Cascade 220 Aran in the color Blueberry Heather and i think it really shows up those beautiful stitches.
What color are you going to crochet your shawl in?

Yarn:
For this shawl pattern i used Cascade 220 which has an AMAZING amount of different shades which i absolutely love when choosing yarn for projects. It is made with 100% highland Peruvian wool and is perfect for shawl projects as it blocks so nicely as it really opens up the stitch definition and that is exactly what you want when blocking a shawl.
This yarn is classed as more of a high end yarn but when you are making a shawl that you want to last for years then you should go for a yarn that will stand the test of time and i really feel this yarn is perfect for that. You will need 880 yards for your shawl.
- 100 grams
- 220 yards /200 meters
- 100% wool
- This yarn is hand wash only / Cascade 220 superwash is machine washable

Yarn Substitutions:
You can easily substitute the yarn i used for a more of an affordable yarn or one that is machine washable. Just remember acrylic yarn doesn’t wet block as well as wool but you could always carefully steam block your shawl.
- Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Worsted
- Lion Brand Heartland Yarn
- Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice

Repeat rows 3-6 until shawl measures 65 inches approx finishing on row 6.
Fasten off and weave in ends. Move on to blocking.
Notes:
If you would like your shawl longer, carry on repeating row 3-6 finishing on row 6 but please note you will need more yarn to do this.
Blocking:
Don’t be scared to really stretch the shawl when blocking as it really opens up the stitches and gives them definition and makes your shawl lay completely flat.
Soak finished shawl for 20 minutes in cool water and squeeze excess water out gently. Do not twist. Lay damp shawl on blocking boards and stretch to 18.5 inch width x 72.75 inch length (or to your desired width and length) use blocking pins to hold in place. Let your shawl dry completely before unpinning.
