Design

Today’s free crochet shawl pattern is the Grace Shawl, this shawl pattern is very similar to the Fantasia Shawl with it’s shell design and mesh stitches which gives both a really beautiful lacy look. The Grace shawl i found that the shells were more in blocked rows and it gives the illusion that it’s more worked as panels.

This pattern is a top down shawl pattern with a long starting chain which might sound hard but i personally love these ones as they work up so quick!

Close up of the lace shawl pattern

The Grace Shawl is rectangle shaped which means there is no increasing or decreasing so it’s a very simple pattern to work up if you are a beginner plus as it uses simple stitches you just need to know what stitches to look out for when working this pattern that is all.

Yarn:

For this shawl pattern i used Cascade 220 which has an AMAZING amount of different shades which i absolutely love when choosing yarn for projects. It is made with 100% highland Peruvian wool and is perfect for shawl projects as it blocks so nicely as it really opens up the stitch definition and that is exactly what you want when blocking a shawl.

This yarn is classed as more of a high end yarn but when you are making a shawl that you want to last for years then you should go for a yarn that will stand the test of time and i really feel this yarn is perfect for that. You will need 880 yards for your shawl.

  • 100 grams
  • 220 yards /200 meters
  • 100% wool
  • This yarn is hand wash only / Cascade 220 superwash is machine washable

Yarn Substitutions:

You can easily substitute the yarn i used for a more of an affordable yarn or one that is machine washable. Just remember acrylic yarn doesn’t wet block as well as wool but you could always carefully steam block your shawl.

Fasten off and weave in ends. Move on to blocking.

Notes:

If you would like your shawl longer, carry on repeating rows 3-4 but please note you will need more yarn to do this.

Soak finished shawl for 20 minutes in cool water and squeeze excess water out gently. Do not twist. Lay damp shawl on blocking boards and stretch to 72 inch width x 19.5 inch height (or to your desired width and height) use blocking pins to hold in place. Let your shawl dry completely before unpinning.
