Today’s free crochet pattern are these Granny Square Fingerless Gloves and if you are like me and obsessed with granny squares then you will love these! Granny squares were one of the things that i first learnt to crochet many many years ago and they are still a firm favorite as they look so good in so many colors!

With these Granny Square Fingerless Gloves i designed them as simple as they could possibly be so they would be perfect for beginner crocheters. You will start by crocheting a square that fits your hand and then simply seam them together down one side and leave a gap for your thumb hole, how simple is that?!

For this crochet project i used scrap yarn that i had leftover from shawl patterns so i decided to use that, i made mine in a color sequence but you could easily make every round a different color depending on what you got in your stash. I used aran yarn for mine from Cascade Yarns, you can use any yarn for yours just make sure your square fits your hand, it’s really as simple as that.

Yarn:

For this crochet pattern i used Cascade 220 which has an AMAZING amount of different shades which i absolutely love when choosing yarn for projects. It is made with 100% highland Peruvian wool and is perfect for projects as it blocks so nicely as it really opens up the stitch definition.

This yarn is classed as more of a high end yarn but when you are making a shawl that you want to last for years then you should go for a yarn that will stand the test of time and i really feel this yarn is perfect for that. You will need scrap yarn for this crochet pattern

  • 100 grams
  • 220 yards /200 meters
  • 100% wool
  • This yarn is hand wash only / Cascade 220 superwash is machine washable

Yarn Substitutions:

You can easily substitute the yarn i used for a more of an affordable yarn or one that is machine washable. Just remember acrylic yarn doesn’t wet block as well as wool but you could always carefully steam block your shawl.

Do not fasten off until you are sure it fits your hand, please see notes.

Notes:

Give your fingerless gloves a bit of a stretch on all sides due to the stitches going tight when crocheting in the round. If you need your granny square fingerless gloves bigger then crochet another round like you did before, put them over your hand to see if they will fit (the opening will be by your thumb) or if you need them only slightly bigger you can work sc, hdc or dc all the way around in each stitch and space and working 3sts in each corner space until you get the desired size.

Once you are happy with them, fasten off leaving a long tail for seaming.

Seaming:

  • Fold granny square fingerless gloves in half with the wrong side facing you, seam together both pieces for about 2 inches approx working from the top downwards. Fasten off and weave in ends.
  • Join yarn at the bottom of glove and seam together for about 2.25 inches approx working upwards. Fasten off and weave in ends.
  • There should be an opening for your thumb. If you need a larger hole for your thumb then don’t seam as much either side of the thumb hole.
  • Repeat on other fingerless glove.
  • Please note – If you added another round of crochet or done some extra stitches to make them larger yours will be larger than the gloves measured so please seam accordingly in the same manner.
