Design

Today’s free crochet pattern is the Penelope Sideways Shawl and is a great filet crochet shawl pattern that only uses two stitches throughout the whole pattern which is the chain stitch and the double crochet stitch and it gives it this lovely open mesh look shawl. The Penelope Sideways Shawl is very similar to the Kaylee Sideways Shawl just without the single crochet stitch which makes this one even quicker than the Kaylee Sideways Shawl – Bonus!

The Penelope Sideways Shawl didn’t take long to crochet at all, it took me about 3 days and that was only crocheting 2 hours a day so if you have the patience to follow a one row repeat for longer than 2 hours than you would get this done in no time at all, unfortunately i don’t, i like to then crochet other things haha!

I wanted to create a very simple crochet shawl pattern that was beginner friendly and had quite a classic look to it and i think this fits the bill and this would also make a wonderful holiday gift for anyone who likes to wear shawls.

Yarn:

For this shawl pattern i used Cascade 220 which has an AMAZING amount of different shades which i absolutely love when choosing yarn for projects. It is made with 100% highland Peruvian wool and is perfect for shawl projects as it blocks so nicely as it really opens up the stitch definition and that is exactly what you want when blocking a shawl.

This yarn is classed as more of a high end yarn but when you are making a shawl that you want to last for years then you should go for a yarn that will stand the test of time and i really feel this yarn is perfect for that. You will need 660 yards for your shawl.

  • 100 grams
  • 220 yards /200 meters
  • 100% wool
  • This yarn is hand wash only / Cascade 220 superwash is machine washable

Buy the wool for this project HERE

Yarn Substitutions:

You can easily substitute the yarn i used for a more of an affordable yarn or one that is machine washable. Just remember acrylic yarn doesn’t wet block as well as wool but you could always carefully steam block your shawl.
