The Moss Stitch

Stitches Used:

Stitch broken down into easy steps:

Ch – Chain

  • Make a slip knot, insert your hook into the slip knot loop.
  • Yarn over and pull up a new loop.
  • The first chain stitch is now complete.
  • Keep repeating the above steps to make the next chain stitch and the rest of the foundation chain.

Written In:

This pattern is written using American standard crochet terminology.

Notes:

  • This crochet pattern is worked in rows starting from the bottom working towards the top, turn your piece over at the end of each row.
  • Ch1 at the start of each row does not count as a stitch throughout the pattern.
  • Repeat what is in between the stars from * to * until the end of the round.
  • If you have a ** in your row you need to follow the pattern from * to * across the entire row and then when you get near the end of the row you will finish your last repeat at ** because you can no longer complete the entire repeat then follow what it says to do to complete the row.
  • Read each row carefully before starting the row.

Multiples:

  • Any even number

Written Instructions for the Moss stitch:

R1. Chain your desired width using the multiples above, 1sc in 4th ch from hook * Ch1, skip next ch, 1sc in next ch * Repeat from * to * all the way across the row, turn

R2. Ch2, skip very first sc, 1sc in next ch1 space * Ch1, skip next sc, 1sc in next ch1 space * Repeat from * to * all the way across the row, turn – Your last stitch will be a sc worked into the space between the ch2 turning chain and the sc stitch from the previous row.

Repeat row 2 until you reach your desired length.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

  • Place your first sc stitch in the 4th ch from the hook – the arrow is pointing to it.

  • Picture shows your first sc stitch made in 4th ch from the hook. The arrow shows you where your next sc stitch will go once you have chained 1.

  • After you have completed row 1 this is what it should look like.

R2. Ch2, skip very first sc, 1sc in next ch1 space * Ch1, skip next sc, 1sc in next ch1 space * Repeat from * to * all the way across the row, turn – Your last stitch will be a sc worked into the space between the ch2 turning chain and the sc stitch from the previous row.

  • After you have made your beginning ch2, the arrow shows you where you will place your first sc stitch.

  • The picture shows you what it will look like when you have done your first sc in the first ch1 space. The arrows show where you will place some of your other sc stitches in the ch1 spaces.

  • The peach arrow shows you where you will place your last sc. It is placed into the space between the ch2 turning ch and the sc stitch from the previous row. The white arrow is your turning chain.

  • Close up picture of the last sc made.

  • This is what row 2 will look like once it is completed.

Repeat row 2 until you reach your desired length.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
