Design
Today’s free pattern is this simple and modern Ferne Granny Square Blanket made with absolute basic stitches using the dc stitch and chain stitch and done in a simple closed granny square design using three simple colors.
I called this the Ferne Granny Square Blanket as it is part of the Ferne collection which you may have come across a couple of Ferne shawls. I decided to go with three different colors for this blanket pattern as this is such a simple pattern and not much going on in the way of chain spaces i thought to jazz it up a bit would be to add some color to make it more appealing but you could easily just do one color as it would still look just as beautiful, mine was more because of photographic purposes.
So this blanket is a 30 inch square so i chose three colors and 10 inches in each color in some lovely chunky yarn which was Stylecraft Special Chunky, now because this is a square blanket you can easily substitute this yarn for any weight and make it any size that you would like and this is why i didn’t call it a baby blanket because this could easily be done as a full throw which would look amazing!
When working the Ferne Granny Square blanket with chunky yarn it just worked up so quickly and this is a great project for beginners to get stuck into and it’s not a hard pattern to remember, i am currently working on the Orla Granny Square Blanket which is also working up a treat! I just need to order some more yarn for it to get the last color finished and then it won’t be long before it’s released.
Yarn:
For this blanket pattern i used Stylecraft Special Chunky which has lots of different colors which i absolutely love when choosing yarn for blanket projects. It is made with 100% acrylic yarn but it is so so soft, there are no scratchiness here!
This acrylic yarn is classed as more of a high end yarn but when you are making a baby blanket or a blanket that you want to last then you should go for a yarn that will stand the test of time and i really feel this yarn is perfect for that special blanket. You will need 709 yards for your blanket if you are making it 30 x 30 inches approx.
- 100 grams
- 157 yards /144 meters
- 100% acrylic yarn
- This yarn is machine washable

Yarn Substitutions:
You can easily substitute the yarn i used for one that is the same weight as mine (chunky) or you could easily substitute it for any aran or DK but please note that you will need more yarn in DK or Aran.

- Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice
