The Granny Stitch

Stitches Used:

Stitch broken down into easy steps:

Ch – Chain

  • Make a slip knot, insert your hook into the slip knot loop.
  • Yarn over and pull up a new loop.
  • The first chain stitch is now complete.
  • Keep repeating the above steps to make the next chain stitch and the rest of the foundation chain.

Written In:

This pattern is written using American standard crochet terminology.

Notes:

  • This crochet pattern is worked in rows starting from the bottom working towards the top, turn your piece over at the end of each row.
  • Ch1 at the start of each row does not count as a stitch throughout the pattern.
  • Repeat what is in between the stars from * to * until the end of the round.
  • If you have a ** in your row you need to follow the pattern from * to * across the entire row and then when you get near the end of the row you will finish your last repeat at ** because you can no longer complete the entire repeat then follow what it says to do to complete the row.
  • Read each row carefully before starting the row.

Multiples:

  • 4 + 6

Written Instructions for the Granny Stitch:

R1. Chain your desired width using the multiples above, Work 3dc in 7th ch from the hook * Ch1, skip next 3 chains, 3dc in next chain * Repeat from * to * all the way across the row until 3 chains remain, ch1, skip next 2 chains, 1dc in last chain, turn

R2. Ch1, 1dc in very first dc, 2dc in first ch1 space * Ch1, skip next 3dc, 3dc in next ch1 space * Repeat from * to * all the way across the row until you reach the last lot of 3dc from the previous row, ch1, skip next 3dc, 2dc in space before the turning chain, 1dc in top of turning chain, turn

R3. Ch1, 1dc in very first dc, ch1, skip next 2dc * 3dc in next ch1 space, ch1, skip next 3dc * Repeat from * to * all the way across the row until you reach the last ch1 space, work 3dc in ch1 space, ch1, skip next 2dc, 1dc in last dc, turn

R4. Ch1, 1dc in very first dc, 2dc in first ch1 space * Ch1, skip next 3dc, 3dc in next ch1 space * Repeat from * to * all the way across the row until you reach the last lot of 3dc from the previous row, ch1, skip next 3dc, 2dc in space before the last dc, 1dc in last dc, turn

Repeat rows 3 + 4 until you reach your desired length.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

  • Place your first 3dc stitch in the 7th ch from the hook – the arrow is pointing to it.

  • Picture shows your first lot of 3dc made in 7th ch from the hook, ch1.

  • Once you have done your ch1 stitch, skip next 3chs – see peach arrows. Work 3dc in next ch – see white arrow.

  • When 3 chains remain, ch1, skip next 2 chains – see peach arrows. 1dc in last chain – see white arrow.

  • When row 1 is completed it should look like this.

R2. Ch1, 1dc in very first dc, 2dc in first ch1 space * Ch1, skip next 3dc, 3dc in next ch1 space * Repeat from * to * all the way across the row until you reach the last lot of 3dc from the previous row, ch1, skip next 3dc, 2dc in space before the turning chain, 1dc in top of turning chain, turn

  • Ch1, the peach arrow is showing you where to place your very first dc. The white arrow is showing you where to place the 2dc in the first ch1 space.

  • Once you reach the last lot of 3dc from the previous row, ch1, skip the next 3dc and work 2dc in the space before the turning chain – see peach arrow. 1dc in top of turning ch – see white arrow.

  • This what the end of the row will look like when the stitches are placed correctly.

  • This is what row 2 will look like once completed.

R3. Ch1, 1dc in very first dc, ch1, skip next 2dc * 3dc in next ch1 space, ch1, skip next 3dc * Repeat from * to * all the way across the row until you reach the last ch1 space, work 3dc in ch1 space, ch1, skip next 2dc, 1dc in last dc, turn

  • The arrows are showing you which 2dc to skip after you have made your first dc, ch1.

  • 3dc in next ch1 space as seen in the picture.

  • When you get to the last ch1 space, work 3dc in space as seen in the picture, ch1. Skip next 2dc – see peach arrows. 1dc in last dc – see white arrow.

  • When row 3 is completed it should look like this.

R4. Ch1, 1dc in very first dc, 2dc in first ch1 space * Ch1, skip next 3dc, 3dc in next ch1 space * Repeat from * to * all the way across the row until you reach the last lot of 3dc from the previous row, ch1, skip next 3dc, 2dc in space before the last dc, 1dc in last dc, turn

  • Once you have worked 1dc in very first dc and 2dc in first ch1 space you will then work 3dc in each ch1 space across – see arrows. Skip all dc stitches across.

  • When you get to the last ch1 space, work 2dc and then place 1dc in top of last dc.

  • When row 4 is completed it should look like this.

Repeat rows 3 + 4 until you reach your desired length.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
